In 1999, Bertoli began to take photographs of various empty tennis courts – private, public, old, new, abandoned. Over twenty-three years, he took thousands of photos of these courts and captured them each intentionally and uniquely. 

The Tennis Courts IV book and its tennis court photographs within aren't focused on tennis itself. It is more like a look at the cyclical return of the seasons, images of tennis courts throughout the years, with all their changes, the changes in the landscape, and the way Bertoli looks at all those changes.
